Ashy Sunflower produces cheerful yellow flowers and is easily grown in a variety of soils, including average, sandy and poor rocky soils, as long as drainage is good. Clay soils should be avoided. It does best in full sun but can tolerate part sun. It is an excellent prairie garden species. Numerous finches will eat the seeds.
Ashy Sunflower spreads rather aggressively through rhizomes and re-seeds if seed heads are allowed to mature. Removal of the seed head before the seed is ripe will prevent re-seeding but will also prevent birds from feasting on the seeds.
